Acting locally

Beginning July 1, 2010 plastic bags will be banned in all stores in L.A. Customers can either bring their own reusable bags or pay $.25 for a biodegradable paper bag.

You might notice that the guy arguing against the ban in the article is a moron.

For those who may not know, there is an area of the Pacific the size of Texas known as the "trash vortex" or "plastic soup" where gyrating currents hold an estimated six kilos of plastic for every kilo of plankton, according to Greenpeace.

Across the world more than 13 billion bags are issued every year to shoppers -- that's about 220 per person. On average they are used for 12 minutes before being discarded, but then they remain in the environment for thousands of years.

Another good reason why we shouldn't use plastic bags. They help reduce our dependence on foreign oil.

Could we get the City of Little Rock or any surrounding communities to adopt such a rule? It would be nice for the Natural State to be a leader on these issues.

I had a conversation along these lines with a foreign visitor just the other day...he made the exact same recommendation.

They do this here in Prague - I have had to buy three bags the entire time I've been here - which I think is pretty good, considering I generally don't plan my trips to the grocery store. I now carry a really nice plastic bag with me at all times in case I go shopping. I think it's absolutely awesome and it works like a dream. I say Class 4CAPSTONE! :)
